Behavior Management

The focus of the behavior management is to reduce challenging behaviors and to increase appropriate communication skills.  Through behavior management programming, we work to give kids, teens and adults with autism the power to communicate their wants and needs appropriately.  We work on reduction of challenging behaviors by identifying what they are trying to communicate and how they can communicate their wants and needs. Challenging behaviors are learned via modeling, association, and observation. Behavior management programming gives correct positive supports and interventions and replacement behaviors and coping strategies are learned.

Examples of challenging behaviors include:

  • Aggression (kicking, slapping, biting)
  • Self-injurious behaviors (head banging, hitting/scratching self)
  • Property destruction (breaking items, throwing items)
  • Elopement (running away from caregivers)
  • Yelling, screaming

We offer a variety of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia.
